Even those of us who are diligent about keeping our tiles clean will eventually realize that despite our hard work — our tiles still look dingy. Nine times out of ten, it isn’t actually the tile that is the problem. In reality, it’s the grout that is dirty. Unlike tile, grout is a porous material that is notorious for absorbing dirt and spills. As such, cleaning your grout is a task that needs to be done regularly. But how do you clean grout so it’ll stay clean? Today, the RCH Cleaning team will share a few tips you can use to clean your grout like a professional.
Start With Hot Water
Your very first step when cleaning your grout is to wipe it down with hot water to remove any surface dirt or grime. It doesn’t have to be boiling water or anything like that. Just simple hot water from the faucet will help to break up the dirt that has built up between the tiles.
Next, Use a Cleaning Solution
After you have used hot water on the grout, it is time to break out the cleaning solution. You can make your own at home with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and warm water. Mix the solution in a spray bottle, then spray the mix on the grout. Let the solution sit on the surface of the grout for five minutes so it can soak into the pores. After it has soaked, gently scrub the grout with a soft brush. If you have an old toothbrush on hand, this is the perfect tool for the task. Avoid using a metal brush as grout is relatively delicate and can be damaged by metal brushes.
Rinse With Hot Water
Once you have scrubbed the solution into the grout, it’s time to rinse with hot water. Make sure you rinse thoroughly. Since grout is porous, it can trap the solution in its pores resulting in a “scummy” texture.
What About Stubborn Stains?
If the home solution isn’t cutting it, it’s time to break out the big guns. Mix two parts baking soda and one part water. Apply this solution to the grout and allow it to sit overnight. Scrub the mixture in the morning and rinse thoroughly.
