You may have seen TikTok videos of people sharing “cleaning hacks,” but it’s not a good idea to follow some of these videos. Most of these videos show people mixing together chemical-based cleansers that should never be combined. They appeal to viewers because they show how clean their toilet, shower, or sink are after cleaning. You may think that mixing cleaners together will make them work better and make your spaces cleaner, and although that may be the case, you are not able to see the chemical reaction released into the air.
Most Dangerous Cleaner Combinations
- Bleach and vinegar create chlorine gas, a gas literally used as chemical warfare in World War I. Chlorine gas causes issues breathing, coughing, and burning sensation in the eyes. Chlorine can also cause death by asphyxiation.
- Bleach and ammonia create chloramine, which can cause issues breathing, coughing, burning sensation in the eyes. Inhalation can also lead to a coma or death.
- Bleach and rubbing alcohol create chloroform, a gas that can cause difficulty breathing, irritation of the ear, nose, and throat, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and drowsiness.
- Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar create peracetic acid, which is a corrosive acid that harms the skin, nose, eyes, throat, and lungs.
Be Aware of Flammable Contents
It’s also important to note that there was a viral video of someone spraying a chemical cleaner into their radiator to clean it. Do not spray chemical cleaners into sources of heat. The chemicals in these cleaners are very flammable and could potentially cause fires and explosions.
Stay Safe While Cleaning
Breathing in any kind of chemical, even when used on its own, is not good for our health. Make sure to open the windows or turn on some form of ventilation to keep air circulating. You don’t want to be in a closed room with toxic fumes!
Make sure you always read the labels on the products you’re using. Never mix products, if possible, but if you are always double-check the ingredients before you make any of the toxic substances listed above!
Wear protective equipment like gloves, safety goggles, and face masks to protect yourself from any chemicals that can cause irritation. Always follow the safety precautions listed on your cleaning products.
Alternative Methods of Cleaning
There are plenty of safer, less harmful cleaners on the market that offer natural, “green” cleaning. There is also the option to make your own household cleaner. Vinegar and lemon juice work wonders to clean surfaces and grease, and have natural anti-bacterial properties. You can also use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide by themselves to disinfect surfaces.
