How often do you need to deep clean your retail store?

Daily cleaning may keep your store tidy, but some dirt and grime build up over time and can only be removed with a thorough deep clean. A clean environment is essential for any store to stay in business. It has become even more important recently for customers to see employees actively cleaning and disinfecting. Sometimes you can’t clean something every day, and that’s where the occasional deep cleaning comes in.

Why You Need to Deep Clean

Customers prefer shopping in clean environments. A clean environment isn’t all about being pleasant to the eye. When a store is clean, it shows that it cares about the health and wellness of its customers and employees.

Many stores clean every day, but some things can’t be cleaned daily like carpets or air vents. Sometimes employees are too busy and can’t finish the cleaning checklist. That’s why it’s important for your store to schedule thorough in-depth cleaning to ensure that everything is as clean as possible.

What to Deep Clean

What you deep clean largely depends on your store. Carpet can accumulate a lot of dirt and stains that cannot be removed from simple vacuuming and it can also leave the store with a slight odor. If your store has carpet, schedule professional carpet cleaning every few months to make sure it stays fresh. If your region has a lot of snow, carpet cleaning may need to occur more regularly throughout the winter to ensure that salt and other debris don’t cause extensive damage to carpets.

If your store has mostly tile or laminate floors, you may need to hire a steam cleaner. Mopping can make the floor look clean, but mops can spread around dirt and bacteria. Steam cleaning gets rid of the dirt, and the heat from the steam kills the bacteria. Steam cleaning will also get into the grout between tiles!

Dusting the air vents will provide a cleaner environment for the overall store. Changing your air filters regularly means less dust floating through the air, and less dust to clean from shelves. Harder to reach spaces like ceilings and support beams should be occasionally cleaned as well to ensure there is no excess dust floating around.

A pretty storefront attracts more customers. Making sure the outside of your store is clean and appealing will bring happier customers and more business. An occasional power washing or window cleaning will make the outside of your store shine. If your store has landscaping, you will want to also have it regularly maintained so greenery doesn’t overgrow.

When You Should Deep Clean

How often you clean depends on how much traffic your store receives and what you sell. It’s important to keep a clean environment, and depending on the materials of the floors/walls and local weather you may not need to deeply clean as much as other stores do. If your store specializes in food-related items you will need to keep up with regulations.

It is a good idea for most retail stores to schedule a deep clean seasonally or more depending on the amount of business it brings in.
