Cleaning Materials to Avoid With Acrylic

In order to conserve the acrylic surface of your bathtub, there are a few traditional cleaning methods and solutions that you will want to avoid. Abrasive cleaners like acetone treatments, paint thinners and steel wool can easily damage the surface of your bathtub. Instead, opt for gentle cleaners like dish soap or ammonia-based solutions. 

Steps to Follow for Cleaning Acrylic Bathtubs

Once you notice stains accumulating on the surface of your tub, follow these steps to remove stains and restore the shine to your bathtub:

1. Get an ammonia-based cleanser or a mixture of dish soap and warm water. Spray the solution on the surface of the tub and let the solution sit for around 5 minutes. With dish soap, you can fill the tub with warm water before using a few squirts of dish soap. 

1. Once your chosen cleaning solution has been allowed to soak, it is time to put in some elbow grease and scrub the surface. Use a soft cloth or a sponge to avoid scratching the acrylic. Scrub in a circular motion with firm, vigorous movements. 

1. Rinse the solution with warm water and continue scrubbing until the stains are gone. If dish soap isn’t working, try an ammonia solution, and vice versa. With enough time and scrubbing, even the worst stains should eventually break up.

1. To keep your tub shiny, you can apply a topical wax a few times a year. You can use nearly any car wax. However, be sure only to apply the wax to the walls of your bathtub. Waxing the bottom of your tub can make the surface slippery and dangerous.
