August Re-Org Checklist: Declutter & Refresh Indoors While the Ozarks Sizzle Outside

When August heat turns the Ozarks into a sauna, you may realize—it’s about time to stay cool in the A/C and give your interiors a makeover!

Well, we definitely agree (and guess what? This is all part of the plan…).

So, this final installment of our Summer Clean-and-Refresh Series is going to focus on decluttering, laundering, and reshuffling the spaces you use every day—so you can roll into fall feeling lighter and more organized.

Let’s do the indoor summer deep clean where it’s cool—in all of those interior spaces we saved for August (to finally beat the heat while also getting everything done).

Time to dive in!

1. Purge & Reset the Pantry

A tidy pantry cuts meal prep time and keeps pests at bay. Empty the shelves completely so you can see what you have, then give every item a quick “use it or lose it” once-over before restocking.

  • Pull everything out. Check expiration dates, remove expired and “never-gonna-use” items.

  • Donate what’s still good to Ozarks Food Harvest or a local pantry.

  • Wipe shelves, replace old shelf paper, and group items by type (baking, snacks, canned goods).

  • Label bins so the family puts things back where they belong.

2. Wash Every Fabric You Forget About

Hidden dust and allergens love to lurk in seldom-washed textiles. A full-house fabric blitz leaves rooms smelling fresher and helps sensitive noses breathe easier.

  • Bedding blitz: Not just sheets and blankets, but also duvet covers, pillow shams, and that spare bedding in the closet.

  • Throw pillows & removable covers: Cold-wash, then air-dry to avoid shrinkage.

  • Throw rugs & bath mats: Shake outside first, then follow care labels.

  • Curtains & fabric shower liners: Gentle cycle, hang-to-dry for wrinkle-free results. Replace if moldy!

3. Conquer the Closets

Thinning your wardrobe now makes getting dressed a breeze when cooler weather hits. Clearing floors and corners as you go also gives grime and spiders nowhere to hide.

  • Edit ruthlessly: If it doesn’t fit, flatter, or make you happy—donate it. Use the “haven’t worn at all in over a year” rule if you’re unsure whether to keep or not.

  • Clean behind & beneath: Vacuum closet floors and wipe baseboards before refilling.

  • Sort to suit you: By color, season, or outfit type—whatever speeds up those busy mornings.

  • Add uniform hangers for a boutique look (and extra rod space).

4. Face the “Everything Zone”

That catch-all drawer or spare room is stealing square footage—and mental bandwidth. A focused, timed purge turns random clutter into neatly labeled, easy-to-find essentials.

Whether it’s a junk drawer, hall closet, or an entire spare bedroom, set a timer (20–30 minutes) and:

  1. Empty the space.

  2. Group like with like (electronics cords, crafts, keepsakes).

  3. Decide fast: keep, donate, recycle, or trash.

  4. Containerize & label before items sneak back into chaos.

5. When to Bring in a Pro

Sometimes you need an objective eye and a tried-and-true system to push past decision fatigue. A professional organizer can fast-track the process and design storage solutions that actually stick.

Most August tasks are DIY-friendly, but a professional organizer can:

  • Create custom storage solutions for awkward closets or hobby rooms.

  • Teach systems that keep clutter from creeping back.

  • Save you hours of decision fatigue by guiding “keep or toss” calls.
